Your brain has the ability to learn and change as you age — a process called brain plasticity. Tonight we will discuss in detail by focusing on the brain effects of musical training  and on the possibility of performing a certain movement just by mere imagination.

This event will be held in English.

Benefits of musical training on brain

Annemarie Seither-Preisler & Peter Schneider (Professors at the Center for Systematic Musicology, University of Graz)
Making music engages the whole brain, involving not only auditory functions, but also motor, visual, attentional, language-related and emotional neural circuits. We conducted a 12-year longitudinal study from the elementary school age until adulthood in 220 subjects, including sub-samples with dyslexia, ADHD and ADD in order to study the effects of musical training on brain and behavior.

The Power of Imagination for Motor Learning

Birgit Helmlinger (PhD student, Med Uni Graz)
Everybody has an idea of how motor learning works – we need to take piano lessons in order to learn to play the piano. If we want to get better at running, we have to run more often. But do we really always need to actually move in order to improve motor function? What if it was possible to train the brain to perform a certain movement without ever physically performing it? What if our brain was able to improve motor function by mere imagination? This talk will discuss potentials and applications, but also limitations of motor imagery.
