Artificial intelligence is making its way into modern medicine – from intensive care units to the care of premature infants. The evening explores how AI supports clinical decision-making, identifies risks at an early stage, and opens up new perspectives for diagnosis and care – but also highlights the pitfalls and ethical questions that come with it.
The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine
Dr. Nadja Maria Gruber
(Postdoc at Medical University of Innsbruck)
Artificial intelligence offers enormous potential in the medical care of premature babies and in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. The presentation will highlight how AI-based methods—particularly deep learning—can support early detection and diagnosis of health risks by analyzing complex medical data. Examples include the identification of biomarkers for neurological development through MRI analysis in preterm infants, as well as the development of AI algorithms for automated ECG analysis in patients with myocardial infarction to enhance clinical decision-making.

The (not so) hidden agenda of AI in the ICU
Patrick Rockenschaub
(Postdoc at Medizinische Universität Innsbruck)
Artificial Intelligence is being trained to assist in intensive care, with the promise of predicting critical events early and supporting medical decision-making. But what exactly are we teaching it — and is it learning what we think it is? In this talk, we’ll explore how AI in medicine often optimizes for unintended — but foreseeable — goals, why context matters more than we realize, and what it would take to build systems that are more robust and reliable.
