Join us on May 21st for an evening where psychology meets philosophy and health science. From the lingering pain of trauma to the logic of existence and the science of intermittent fasting, three talks dive into what shapes our inner and outer lives.

Pain After Trauma: A Re-experiencing Symptom?

Sabrina Hettegger (PhD student, PLUS Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychopathology)
After experiencing a traumatic event (such as a car accident or physical violence), some people develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a mental health condition with symptoms like intrusive memories—sudden and unwanted reliving of parts of the traumatic experience.
Interestingly, some trauma survivors also experience pain that cannot be medically explained. One possible reason for this is that they might be "re-experiencing" the pain they felt during the traumatic event. This is known as pain-intrusions.
In my PhD research, I am investigating whether the medically unexplained pain some trauma survivors experience today might actually be pain-intrusions. I am also examining other PTSD symptoms to better understand how pain intrusions are connected to them.

Intermittent fasting for health and performance: does it really work?

Christoph Bamberg (PhD student, PLUS Department of Clinical Psychology and Health Psychology)
Our ancestors were adapted to long stretches without food, yet today many of us snack from dawn to dusk. This constant consumption of high-caloric foods is one major contributor to the obesity epidemic. From this the question follows how often we really need to eat to stay active and alert and live healthily. In this talk, we will explore how intermittent fasting—brief, scheduled pauses from eating— is a viable alternative to our modern lifestyle. We will discuss whether intermittent fasting is a way to tap into our evolutionary strengths, how it can boost performance, and get practical insights for anyone curious about trying it.
