As AI grows more capable, big questions arise: Should machines have rights? Who's responsible for their mistakes? How do we set rules for non-human minds? And as they take on bigger roles, how do we power them — and live with them? Just bring curiosity.
Robot rights
Emily Kate Genatowski
(PhD Candidate investigating AI Domestic Robotics)
What engineering features would be unlocked, who benefits most when we recognize robots as their own group under the law, why agency isn't actually necessary, when legal rights could kick in and how future societies' recognition of robot rights could be formed on precedence from a wild collection of legal entities like heritage sites, endangered species, embryos, and ships. Join Historian and Futurist Emily Kate and take a wild trip through time showcasing the connection of past and future from the Justinian Code of 6th Century Rome to the potential Robot Rights of the year 3000. Let's talk Taxation, Security, Data Protection, Ownership, Liability, Identity, Border Crossings and more at Pint of Science!
Hot n Cold
Christine Fiedler
(PhD student in Chemistry )
What if the heat lost from your coffee, your laptop, or even your car exhaust could be turned directly into electricity? Or what if that same technology could cool your phone, chill your drinks, or regulate the temperature of sensitive electronics? Thermoelectric technology has the potential to do exactly that, with no moving parts. The catch? Making this applicable in the real world is tricky: the challenge isn’t just generating electricity or simply cooling; it’s doing so efficiently while keeping the fabrication affordable. So how do we tackle this? By using nanoparticles and exploiting their surface chemistry we can make materials efficient in converting heat into electricity, and with clever nanoscale design coupled with 3D printing, we can build cost-effective thermoelectric coolers, while keeping things quite “cool”.
