Name: How do we use light to build the computers of tomorrow?
Start: 2026-11-19T19:00:00
End: 2026-11-19T21:00:00
Location: Beavers Pub - downstairs

Quantum computers are fundamentally changing our world. At this Pint of Science Special, Martin Mauser and Daniel Martinez Arias from Philip Walther’s team at the University of Vienna offer insights into current research on quantum technologies and their potential applications in space.

This special event takes place in the context of the current Semesterfrage at the University of Vienna “What are the big questions of our time?”. Explore our focus topic at the Rudolphina research magazine: https://rudolphina.univie.ac.at/en/big-questions.

How Do You Build a Quantum Computer for Space?

Daniel Martinez (Postdoc in the Walther’s Quantum Science group, University of Vienna)

Martin Mauser (PhD Candidate in the Walther’s Quantum Science group, University of Vienna)

Did you know that a team from the University of Vienna built and launched a satellite payload carrying a photonic quantum processor? In this talk, we’ll tell the story of ROQUET, a low-orbit payload for image classification enhanced by quantum measurements. Discover how it works, what we learned from it, and meet the people who turned this wild ambitious idea into reality.

A Pint of Quantum Knowledge

Daniel Martinez (Postdoc in the Walther’s Quantum Science group, University of Vienna)

Martin Mauser (PhD Candidate in the Walther’s Quantum Science group, University of Vienna)

How does a quantum computer work, and what are its benefits? Quantum mechanics turns our view of reality upside down. Particles can't exist in multiple places, their wave functions can, and until measured the particle state is defined. Yet quantum physics powers technologies we use every day. Curious about how it all works? Join us for a deep dive into the quantum world!
